The mold requirements for UHPC single-curved panels and double-curved panels differ significantly due to varying surface complexity, and mold adaptability directly affects modeling precision and production efficiency. Qinglong Group, an enterprise capable of producing both types of components, analyzes the core differences between the two based on 28 years of mold-making experience.
1. Mold Structural Design: Differences Between Single Curvature and Bidirectional Coordination UHPC single-curved panels have curvature in only one direction, so their molds are designed as single-curved surface structures, typically using a simple combination of "base mold + side mold," with the side mold adjustable in a single direction according to the curvature. In contrast, UHPC double-curved panels have curvature in two perpendicular directions, requiring molds designed as bidirectional curved surface coordination structures, using either a "rigid frame + flexible surface layer" or precision all-steel machining to ensure that the curvature in both directions simultaneously meets design requirements. In a project in Nanning, Qinglong used adjustable steel molds for single-curved panels and customized all-steel molds for double-curved panels, each adapted to different curved surface requirements.
2. Precision Requirements: Stricter Tolerance Control for Double-Curved Panels The precision requirements of the two differ significantly: the allowable surface profile error for UHPC single-curved panel molds is ±0.5mm, with surface flatness ≤0.3mm/m, while double-curved panel molds require a surface profile error ≤±0.3mm, surface flatness ≤0.2mm/m, and jointing error ≤±0.2mm. This is because the bidirectional curvature of double-curved panels creates an error stacking effect, where minor errors are amplified into shape distortion. In the Guangxi New Media Center project, Qinglong applied 3D laser scanning inspection to double-curved panel molds to ensure that the error at every point remained within the allowable range.
3. Materials and Processes: Technical Upgrades for Double-Curved Panel Molds Mold materials and machining processes also differ. Single-curved panel molds can use GRP or ordinary steel plates, with relatively simple machining involving only CNC bending or manual shaping; double-curved panel molds require high-strength steel plates or high-precision polyurethane soft molds, with complex machining processes that rely on five-axis CNC machining centers to precisely replicate bidirectional curvature, and some complex double-curved molds also require segmented machining and assembly debugging. Although Qinglong's machining cycle for double-curved panel molds is 30%-50% longer than for single-curved panels, advanced equipment and processes ensure mold reusability and precision stability. In the Shanghai Century Plaza project, a single set of double-curved panel molds achieved the precise production of more than 50 panels.
The core differences in mold requirements between UHPC single-curved and double-curved panels lie in structural complexity, precision control, and machining processes. With long-term production experience in both types of components, Qinglong Group provides adapted mold solutions for different curved surface types. Choosing a supplier with accumulated technical expertise in double-curved surface molds is the core guarantee for ensuring the modeling precision of UHPC special-shaped components.
