The "cornice lifeline" of a building directly determines the whole-life-cycle value of a project. As an industry leader with 28 years of deep expertise in the UHPC/GRC field, Qinglong Group has witnessed the durability performance of these two materials across hundreds of landmark projects. The lifespan gap between UHPC cornice components and GRC components is no accident, but the inevitable result of material fundamentals and process upgrades.
According to the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC) (JGJ/T423-2018) and the General Technical Conditions for Non-Load-Bearing Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) Components, both of which Qinglong helped formulate, quality GRC cornice components have a design service life of typically 20-50 years, while UHPC cornice components can reach 50-100 years, with the core gap concentrated in the 20-50 year range. This data has been verified by Qinglong's project tracking: the GRC cornice components of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, completed in 2013, still maintain their basic performance after more than 10 years of monitoring, while UHPC cornices used in overseas projects of the same period show almost no performance degradation under even harsher climates.
1. Density difference: UHPC adopts optimized gradations of quartz sand, steel fibers and more, with porosity below 1%, while GRC has a porosity of about 15%-20%, making it difficult for moisture and harmful substances to penetrate. Qinglong's UHPC cornices are formed under high pressure and steam cured, with an internal structure as dense as stone, blocking corrosion paths at the source.
2. Fiber durability: GRC relies on alkali-resistant glass fibers, which tend to age and become brittle under long-term exposure; the steel fibers used in UHPC are anti-corrosion treated and work in synergy with the concrete matrix, improving crack resistance by more than 3 times. Qinglong's patented formulation further enhances the bond between fibers and the matrix, extending service life.
3. Resistance to environmental attack: UHPC withstands more than 300 freeze-thaw cycles and reaches a sulfate resistance rating of KS150, far exceeding GRC's 150 cycles and KS50 standard. In the Ouargla Hotel project in Algeria, Qinglong's UHPC hollow-out cornices have endured extreme temperature differences for 10 years without cracking or deformation.
The UHPC public art cornice components of the Shanghai Astronomy Museum, over 3 meters tall, were produced with Qinglong's special formulation and have a design life of 80 years; after 5 years of use, the surface still shows no signs of weathering. Some earlier GRC cornice projects, even with Qinglong's professional maintenance, still require partial replacement after 20 years. This comparison confirms UHPC's advantage in long-term value, making it especially suitable for municipal landmarks, high-end real estate and other projects with high durability requirements.
Choosing a cornice component is essentially choosing the long-term value of a building. Through material innovation and process upgrades, UHPC has doubled its lifespan, and Qinglong, as a full-chain service provider from detailed design to after-sales maintenance, makes this promise of durability take root. For owners and designers pursuing century-long projects, UHPC cornice components are undoubtedly the optimal solution balancing aesthetics and long-term performance.
