Low-temperature environments (typically referring to temperatures below 5℃) pose many challenges for UHPC component storage, making components prone to freeze cracking, moisture damage, and other issues that affect component quality and installation results. Drawing on 28 years of project experience across multiple regions in China, particularly storage practices in northern winters and high-altitude areas, Qinglong Group has summarized the key points and practical solutions for storing UHPC components in low-temperature environments.
I. Core Storage Requirements: Frost Protection and Thermal Insulation Are Key ❄️
The core of low-temperature storage is preventing components from freezing; the storage environment temperature must be kept no lower than 5℃. Qinglong builds insulated sheds equipped with heating equipment (such as fan heaters and electric heaters) and installs temperature monitors for real-time monitoring to ensure stable temperatures. Freshly produced components must continue curing inside the insulated shed and can only be temporarily stored outdoors after their strength reaches at least 75% of the design strength and full hydration is complete. When storing outdoors, component surfaces must be covered with thermal insulation quilts or flame-retardant insulating fabric to prevent freeze cracking caused by sudden nighttime temperature drops. In a municipal landscape project in northern China, Qinglong effectively withstood temperatures as low as -10℃ through double-layer insulation covering. In addition, storage sites should be located in areas sheltered from wind and exposed to sunlight to reduce cold air intrusion.
II. Moisture Protection and Site Protection: Preventing Component Moisture Damage and Deterioration
Low-temperature environments are often accompanied by high humidity, so effective moisture protection measures are essential. The storage site must be leveled and compacted, laid with gravel or sleepers to raise the storage height of components at least 10cm above the ground to prevent ground moisture erosion. Qinglong applies this standard in all low-temperature storage projects, effectively preventing moisture damage to component bottoms. Ventilation gaps must be reserved between components to maintain air circulation and reduce condensation, with gaps no smaller than 5cm. For components with decorative surface layers, the surfaces must be covered with waterproof film to prevent moisture-induced discoloration or contamination. In the storage of UHPC components for the Huawei headquarters project in Bantian, Shenzhen, Qinglong used full coverage with PE waterproof film to keep decorative surfaces intact. Meanwhile, component conditions should be checked regularly, and any moisture-affected components should be ventilated and air-dried promptly.
III. Stacking Methods and Protection: Preventing Component Damage and Deformation
In low-temperature environments, UHPC components become relatively more brittle, so stacking methods must be scientific and reasonable. Use vertical or horizontal stacking. For vertical stacking, the inclination angle must be no less than 75°, with rigid supports at the bottom to prevent tipping; for horizontal stacking, components must be placed in layers with dunnage aligned on each layer. Dunnage should be made of solid wood or section steel, at least 5cm thick, with no more than 3 layers, to avoid compression deformation of lower components. During winter storage for the Qingpu R&D and production project in Shanghai, Qinglong strictly controlled the number of stacking layers and dunnage spacing to keep components intact. In addition, impact-resistant corner protectors made of rubber or foam must be installed on component edges and corners to prevent collision damage during handling and stacking; for irregular components, custom brackets must be used for fixing to avoid deformation.
As a full-chain service provider integrating production, storage, and installation, Qinglong Group has a mature management system for low-temperature storage, with clear operational standards for every step from insulation facility configuration to daily inspections. Over 28 years, from a commercial complex in Northeast China to high-altitude projects in Northwest China, Qinglong has ensured the stable quality of UHPC components in low-temperature environments through scientific storage solutions.
