UHPC shapes can achieve rich color gradient effects through advanced processes, enhancing artistic expression. Achieving gradient effects requires combining material properties with precise process control. Drawing on experience from colored UHPC projects such as the Nanning Liyuan Hotel, Qinglong explains gradient effect implementation solutions and practical key points to meet personalized aesthetic needs.
I. Core Implementation Solutions for Color Gradients
Select an appropriate process solution according to gradient effect requirements. Integrated casting gradient: color gradients are achieved during the UHPC mixing and casting stages by adding inorganic mineral pigments of different colors in layers, controlling pigment mixing ratios and casting sequences to form a naturally transitioning gradient effect; suitable for gradients of whole components (e.g., from light gray to dark gray). Qinglong adopted this solution in a UHPC sculpture project, achieving smooth color transitions. Surface coating gradient: after component production, gradients are achieved by spraying or brushing colored coatings; using special gradient coatings, gradient effects are precisely presented by controlling coating thickness and color layering sequence; suitable for partial gradients or complex pattern gradients, and can be combined with masks for precise area gradients. Mold texture gradient: apply gradient-colored release agents or coatings to the mold surface, so that after UHPC forming, texture and color are replicated simultaneously; suitable for gradient effects combining texture and color (e.g., biomimetic wood grain color gradients); the wood-grain UHPC panels of the Shanghai New World project adopted this process.
II. Key Process Controls for Achieving Gradient Effects
Refined process operations ensure precise presentation of gradient effects. Pigment selection and proportioning: select highly weather-resistant inorganic mineral pigments to avoid the fading of organic pigments; formulate a detailed pigment proportioning table according to gradient requirements, keeping each layer's color deviation within ±2%. Qinglong achieves multi-color gradients without obvious breakpoints through precise proportioning. Casting process control: integrated casting gradients require a layered casting process, with each layer's casting thickness controlled at 5-10mm and casting intervals ≤30 minutes to avoid obvious layering; gently vibrate with a poker vibrator to promote natural color blending. Coating process optimization: surface coating gradients use a high-pressure airless spraying process, controlling spray pressure (0.3-0.5MPa) and nozzle movement speed to ensure uniform coating; the edges of gradient areas are precisely delineated with masks to prevent color overflow. Mold treatment key points: mold texture gradients require a clean, smooth mold surface, uniform coating application, and compatibility between the release agent and the pigment coating to avoid color peeling during demolding.
III. Durability Assurance Measures for Gradient Effects
Proper protective treatment ensures long-term stability of gradient colors. Surface sealing treatment: regardless of the gradient solution adopted, a transparent fluorocarbon sealing coating must be applied after completion, with a thickness ≥0.8mm, to enhance UV and weathering resistance and prevent color fading. Qinglong's fluorocarbon coating can extend the service life of gradient colors to more than 15 years. Pigment fixing technology: integrated casting gradients require adding special curing agents to the pigments to enhance the bonding between pigments and the UHPC substrate and prevent later color loss; the curing agent dosage is controlled at 5%-8% of the pigment weight. Regular maintenance: clean and renovate the protective coating on UHPC shape surfaces every 2-3 years, promptly repairing minor scratches and faded areas. Qinglong provides specialized maintenance plans for gradient UHPC projects to ensure long-term stability of gradient effects.
IV. Application Scenarios and Precautions for Gradient Effects
Apply gradient effects appropriately to avoid construction risks. Suitable scenarios: projects with high aesthetic requirements such as commercial complex facades, public art sculptures, and theme park decorations, where gradient colors can echo the surrounding environment and enhance architectural recognition. Precautions: gradient effect design must consider construction feasibility, avoiding overly complex color transitions that make the process too difficult; color selection must consider weather resistance—dark gradients require the addition of UV absorbers to prevent heat absorption from causing component deformation; produce a 1:1 sample before construction and proceed to mass production only after confirming the gradient effect meets design requirements. Qinglong implements a sample confirmation process in all gradient projects to ensure the final effect meets standards.
