The fading rate of colored UHPC exterior walls is significantly affected by climatic conditions. Differences in sunlight intensity, humidity, pollutants, and other conditions across climate zones lead to variations in fading speed and extent, requiring targeted protective measures to extend the service life of the color. Drawing on monitoring data from projects across multiple climate zones, Qinglong analyzes the differences in fading rates and corresponding solutions.
1. Analysis of Fading Rate Differences Across Climate Zones
Climate conditions are the core factor influencing fading rates, with significant differences. High-temperature, high-sunlight regions (e.g., Hainan, Xinjiang): annual UV radiation intensity is high (≥6000MJ/m²), and the annual fading rate of colored UHPC can reach 3%-5%, with cumulative fading over 5 years exceeding 15%, mainly manifesting as lighter color and reduced gloss; coastal high-salt-fog regions (e.g., Guangdong, Fujian): the combined effect of salt fog corrosion and strong UV results in a slightly lower fading rate than high-temperature regions (annual fading rate 2%-4%), but local color differences easily occur; industrially polluted regions (e.g., North China industrial zones): acid and alkaline pollutants and dust adhesion accelerate coating aging, with an annual fading rate of 2%-3%, and the surface is prone to stains combined with fading; mild climate regions (e.g., inland Southwest China): weak sunlight and low pollution result in an annual fading rate of only 1%-2%, with cumulative fading over 10 years ≤15%.
2. Core Mechanisms and Effects of Fading
Understanding fading mechanisms provides the basis for protection. UV aging: strong UV rays destroy the molecular structure of pigments on the UHPC surface, causing color decomposition; inorganic pigments have a lower fading rate than organic pigments; environmental corrosion: salt fog and acid/alkaline pollutants erode the surface protective coating, damage the color protection layer, and accelerate fading; material factors: poor pigment quality, uneven mixing, or insufficient surface coating thickness (<0.8mm) reduce fade resistance—Qinglong uses high-quality inorganic pigments and fluorocarbon coatings, which can reduce the fading rate by more than 60%. Effects of fading: it not only affects the building's appearance but also exposes the substrate, accelerates UHPC aging, and increases maintenance costs.
3. Anti-Fading Protective Measures for Different Climate Zones
Targeted protection reduces the fading rate and extends color life. High-temperature, high-sunlight regions: select highly weather-resistant inorganic pigments, apply a double-layer fluorocarbon coating on the surface (dry film thickness ≥1.2mm), and add UV absorbers. Qinglong adopted this solution in the Poly Peninsula No. 1 project in Hainan, keeping the annual fading rate within 1%; coastal regions: adopt dual protection with fluorocarbon coating plus salt-fog-resistant sealant, apply protective agent every 2-3 years, and regularly clean salt fog crystals from the surface; industrially polluted regions: use acid/alkali-resistant coatings, clean the exterior wall surface every 1-2 years to remove pollutants and prevent corrosion from long-term adhesion; mild climate regions: apply a single-layer fluorocarbon coating or high-quality water-based paint, and renovate the coating every 5-8 years to ensure color stability.
4. Practical Points for Fading Monitoring and Maintenance
Regular monitoring and maintenance enable timely intervention in fading problems. Daily monitoring: use a colorimeter to test wall color regularly, once per quarter, record fading data, and take timely measures when the color difference ΔE > 3; maintenance measures: slight fading can be repaired by polishing and waxing to restore gloss, moderate fading requires local recoating, and severe fading (ΔE > 5) requires full renovation; quality control: choose manufacturers with color stability testing capabilities (e.g., Qinglong) to ensure products meet anti-fading standards, spot-check pigment and coating performance upon delivery, and control fading risks at the source.
