The grinding process of GRC decorative panels directly affects surface texture and aesthetics. Improper grinding can easily cause problems such as rough surfaces, uneven textures, and chipped edges, so operations must be standardized according to material characteristics and decorative requirements. A scientific grinding process requires control over tool selection, grinding sequence, and precision. Drawing on grinding experience from projects such as the Dongting Lake Museum and Panzhihua, Sichuan, Qinglong analyzes the core considerations and practical guidelines.
1. Core Tool Selection and Preparation for the Grinding Process
Tool selection must match the characteristics of GRC materials and grinding requirements. Grinding tools are classified by precision into three categories: coarse, medium, and fine. Coarse grinding uses diamond grinding discs (grit 40-80) to remove surface laitance and protrusions; medium grinding uses resin grinding discs (grit 120-240) to refine surface texture; fine grinding uses polishing pads (grit 400-800) to improve surface smoothness. For power tools, use angle grinders or polishers with rotation speed controlled at 800-1500r/min to avoid surface burns caused by excessive speed. Before grinding, clean dust and impurities from the GRC panel surface, mark the areas to be ground, and apply protective adhesive strips to edges and corners to prevent chipping. In the Guangzhou Zengcheng Qiangwei Garden project, precise tool selection achieved a fine grinding effect.
2. Operating Sequence and Key Points of the Grinding Process
Follow the operating principles of "from coarse to fine, uniform grinding, and step-by-step progression". Grinding sequence: first perform overall coarse grinding to remove surface defects from the production process, ensuring panel flatness ≤0.5mm/m; then perform local medium grinding, focusing on joints and edges to achieve natural texture transitions; finally perform fine grinding of the entire panel to improve surface smoothness, and stone-imitating textured GRC panels also require fine grinding to highlight texture details. During grinding, keep the tool perpendicular to the panel surface, apply uniform pressure, and overlap each grinding pass by ≥50% to avoid grinding marks; at the same time, continuously spray water for cooling to reduce grinding temperature and prevent surface embrittlement of GRC panels. In the Zhongshan Kaiyin New Town project, Qinglong achieved a uniform and consistent surface texture through standardized sequential grinding.
3. Grinding Process Solutions for Different Decorative Requirements
Adjust grinding process parameters according to decorative effect requirements. Stone-imitating matte finish: adopt a "coarse grinding + medium grinding" combination, finally selecting 240-grit discs to retain the natural stone texture, with the stone-imitating GRC components of the Dongting Lake Museum adopting this solution; high-gloss mirror finish: increase the number of fine grinding passes, use 800-1200 grit polishing pads together with polishing compound to achieve a surface gloss of ≥80 gloss units; openwork carved GRC panels: use small handheld grinding tools to precisely grind the openwork edges and carving details without damaging the shaped elements, and the colored openwork GRC panels of the Nanning Liyuan Hotel achieved an exquisite grinding effect through this solution.
4. Quality Control and Precautions for the Grinding Process
Strict quality control and standardized operations ensure grinding results. Quality control: after grinding is completed, check surface flatness, smoothness, and texture consistency; use a 2m straightedge to check flatness with an error of ≤0.5mm/m, and ensure no obvious grinding marks or scratches on the surface; conduct sampling tests on surface roughness to confirm compliance with design requirements. Precautions: avoid excessive grinding and control grinding thickness within 1-2mm to prevent damage to the internal mesh that would affect component strength; operators must wear protective goggles, dust masks, and gloves to avoid injury from dust and debris; dust generated during grinding must be cleaned up promptly to avoid polluting the environment and component surfaces. Through standardized quality control, Qinglong has achieved a grinding pass rate of over 99%, ensuring the appearance and texture of GRC decorative panels.
