The joint width design for GRC decorative panel installation directly affects the building's appearance and structural stability. Joints that are too small can easily cause panels to crack under compression due to thermal expansion and contraction, while overly wide joints compromise aesthetics and waterproofing performance. Scientific joint width design requires comprehensive consideration of material properties, environmental conditions, and panel dimensions. Drawing on installation experience from projects such as the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center and Shanghai Xinghewan, Qinglong analyzes the core design specifications and practical solutions.
I. Core Basis and Principles of Joint Width Design
Joint width design must follow three major principles: "deformation compatibility, installation feasibility, and reliable waterproofing." The core basis includes the thermal expansion and contraction properties of the material: the linear expansion coefficient of GRC panels is approximately 10×10⁻⁶/°C, so deformation must be calculated based on local extreme temperature differences, and the joint width must be ≥ thermal deformation + installation tolerance. Regarding panel dimensions, the longer the panel, the greater the deformation, so the joint width must be increased accordingly. Regarding environmental conditions, areas with intense heat and sun exposure or high humidity require larger joint widths to compensate for additional deformation. Qinglong's design specifications require a base joint width of 8-12mm in standard regions, with an additional 2-3mm reserved for installation tolerance to ensure sufficient deformation allowance.
II. Joint Width Design Standards for Different Scenarios
Design joint widths precisely according to the application scenario and environment. Indoor scenarios: ambient temperature is stable with small temperature differences; flat panel joint width is 5-8mm, while shaped panels (such as curved or openwork panels) require an increased joint width of 8-10mm due to their complex forms. Standard outdoor scenarios: temperature differences are larger; flat panel joint width is 8-12mm, and large panels (length > 4m) require 12-15mm. Coastal high-humidity and high-temperature areas: joint width is 10-15mm due to the combined effects of temperature difference and humidity-induced deformation. Seismic design zones: an additional 2-3mm of joint width is required to accommodate seismic deformation. In the Nanning Wuxiang Huarun Wanxianghui project, Qinglong designed the joint width at 12-15mm according to seismic requirements.
III. Optimization and Supporting Measures for Joint Width Design
Enhance joint practicality through design optimization and supporting measures. Panel layout optimization: adopt a staggered joint layout to reduce continuous joints and lower waterproofing risks while dispersing deformation stress. Joint profile design: use V-shaped or U-shaped joints to facilitate sealant application and later maintenance, with joint depth ≥ 15mm to ensure firm sealant adhesion. Waterproofing design: joints should be paired with a dual seal of "foam backer rod + sealant"; the foam rod diameter should be 20% larger than the joint width to ensure full filling; the sealant should be silicone weather-resistant sealant with a movement capability of ≥ ±25% to accommodate deformation. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center project, Qinglong effectively solved joint waterproofing issues through these supporting designs.
IV. Construction Control and Quality Assurance for Joint Width
Precise control during construction ensures joint widths meet standards. Use dedicated positioning spacers to control the joint width; the spacers are made of hard rubber, with thickness matching the designed joint width and spacing ≤ 1m. Use a laser level for calibration during installation to ensure joints are uniform and straight, with deviation ≤ 1mm. Clean the joints before sealant application, removing dust, debris, and moisture to ensure reliable adhesion. After construction, check the joint widths and sealing quality to avoid inconsistent widths, sealant detachment, or other issues. Through standardized construction control, Qinglong achieves a joint width qualification rate of over 99%, ensuring installation quality and structural stability.
