As common curtain wall materials, UHPC panels and GRC cladding panels differ significantly in unit price. Understanding the price gap and its causes, and selecting materials based on project requirements, is key to controlling costs and ensuring quality. Drawing on its production and application experience with both materials, Qinglong analyzes the unit price differences, influencing factors, and selection strategies.
I. Unit Price Difference Range Between UHPC Panels and GRC Cladding Panels
The unit price gap between the two is considerable; under standard specifications, UHPC panels cost 2-3 times as much as GRC cladding panels. Standard flat panels (25mm thick, 3m×2m): UHPC panels are priced at approximately 1,000-1,200 yuan/m², while GRC cladding panels are about 350-500 yuan/m²; special-shaped components (such as double-curved panels and hollow-out panels): UHPC panels are 1,500-2,000 yuan/m², and GRC cladding panels are 600-800 yuan/m²; high-performance custom versions: UHPC panels (compressive strength ≥150MPa, fine surface treatment) can reach over 2,000 yuan/m², while GRC cladding panels (anti-corrosion reinforced type) are about 800-1,000 yuan/m². For bulk supply, Qinglong's price gap between the two narrows slightly, but the overall ratio remains stable.
II. Analysis of the Core Causes of Unit Price Differences
The price gap stems from differences in materials, processes, and performance. In terms of raw material costs, UHPC requires premium materials such as high-grade cement, quartz sand, and steel fiber, with steel fiber content reaching 2%-3%, making its raw material cost more than twice that of GRC; GRC mainly uses ordinary cement and alkali-resistant glass fiber, resulting in lower raw material costs. In terms of production processes, UHPC production requires precise control of the water-binder ratio (0.20-0.25), combined with steam curing and high-pressure vibration, leading to long production cycles and high energy consumption; the GRC production process is relatively simple, using spray molding or casting, offering high production efficiency and lower costs. In terms of performance differences, UHPC's compressive strength (≥120MPa) is more than 6 times that of GRC (≥20MPa), with greater durability and longer service life—these performance advantages support the price premium.
III. Selection Recommendations Based on Project Requirements
Material selection should balance cost, performance, and application scenarios to achieve optimal value for money. For high-end landmark buildings, large-span structures, and projects with high durability requirements (such as coastal or high-temperature environments), UHPC panels are the preferred choice, as their high strength and high durability can reduce long-term maintenance costs—as seen in projects such as the Shanghai Astronomy Museum and the Ouargla Hotel in Algeria; for ordinary commercial buildings, residential exterior walls, and projects with limited budgets, GRC cladding panels can be used, meeting decorative and basic performance requirements through rational design—as in residential projects such as Kaiyin New Town in Zhongshan and Jiahe City in Nanning; for hybrid selection schemes, UHPC panels are used at critical positions (corners and load-bearing areas) while GRC cladding panels are used in regular areas, balancing performance and cost. Qinglong adopted this approach in the Xiangshan Science and Technology Park project in Longhua, Shenzhen, with remarkable results.
IV. Life-Cycle Cost Considerations: Rebalancing Value for Money
Selection should focus on life-cycle costs rather than just the initial unit price. UHPC panels have a service life of 25-30 years with low maintenance costs (surface protection every 5 years), offering clear life-cycle cost advantages; GRC cladding panels have a service life of approximately 15-20 years and require regular replacement of sealant and damaged components, resulting in higher long-term maintenance costs. For projects with long service periods and difficult maintenance, although UHPC panels have a higher initial unit price, their life-cycle value for money is superior; for short-term use or easily maintained projects, GRC cladding panels offer greater cost advantages. Qinglong can provide customers with life-cycle cost calculation services to support scientific material selection.
