Corner GRC components are subject to complex stress and prone to stress concentration, so thickness design must balance strength with shaping requirements; improper thickness treatment can easily lead to cracking, breakage and other problems. Scientifically determining thickness parameters and adopting reinforcement measures are key to ensuring corner component safety. Drawing on experience from multiple landmark projects, Qinglong analyzes the core design points.
I. Basic Design Standards for Corner Component Thickness
According to the Technical Standard for Building Application of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC), the thickness of corner GRC components must be 20%-30% greater than that of flat components. Conventional flat components have a thickness of ≥15mm, while the base thickness of corner components must be ≥18mm; exterior wall corners subject to heavy wind loads require a thickness of 20-25mm; complex irregular corners (such as double-curved or multi-faceted corners) require a thickness of ≥25mm. For the “Chinese Red Lantern” corner components of the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, Qinglong adopted a 25mm thickness design to meet complex stress requirements. Thickness design must also take component dimensions into account: when a corner component exceeds 3m in height, the thickness must be further increased by 2-3mm to ensure overall stability.
II. Key Factors Affecting Corner Thickness Design
The thickness of corner components must be determined with multiple factors comprehensively considered. Load conditions are the core influencing factor: exterior wall corners must withstand wind loads, seismic action and thermal stress, so the thickness must be increased accordingly—in regions with force-9 typhoons, corner thickness is increased by 3-5mm compared with conventional regions. In terms of shape complexity, acute corners (angle <90°) show more pronounced stress concentration than obtuse corners (angle >90°), requiring an additional 5-8mm in thickness. In terms of service environment, coastal high-salt-mist environments and low-temperature freeze-thaw environments require an additional 2-3mm of thickness as protective redundancy to enhance durability. The connection method also affects thickness: corner components using dry-hanging connections require a thickness of ≥20mm to ensure secure anchor installation. In the Hainan Poly Peninsula No.1 project, Qinglong designed dry-hanging corner components with a thickness of 22mm.
III. Thickness Transition and Reinforcement Design for Corner Components
Proper thickness transition and reinforcement design can avoid stress concentration. Corner components should adopt a gradual transition with adjacent flat components, with a transition length of ≥100mm, where the thickness tapers from the corner thickness down to the flat component thickness to avoid cracking caused by abrupt change. Reinforcing ribs should be added inside the corner, using Φ6-8mm steel bars or alkali-resistant glass fiber mesh; the ribs extend 200mm along each side of the corner to enhance overall tensile strength. In the Dongguan Women and Children's Activity Center corner components, Qinglong used double-layer mesh reinforcement, improving crack resistance by 40%. For large-size corner components (side length >2m), a built-in steel frame provides support; the steel frame is tightly bonded with the GRC matrix to distribute loads and ensure structural stability.
IV. Practical Cases and Verification of Corner Thickness Design
Corner thickness design must be flexibly adjusted for different project scenarios. Right-angle corners on commercial complex exterior walls: base thickness of 20mm with single-layer steel mesh reinforcement inside, meeting the needs of the Shenzhen Longhua Xiangshan Science and Technology Park project; irregular corners of cultural landmarks: double-curved corner thickness of 25mm with dual reinforcement of steel frame + mesh, such as the Guangxi New Media Center project; residential building exterior wall corners: conventional thickness of 18mm with a weather-resistant coating applied on the outside for enhanced protection, fitting the Zhongshan Kaiyin New Town project; coastal corner components: thickness of 22mm with rust inhibitor added and stainless steel connectors, such as the Sanya Festival Plaza project. Through precise thickness design and reinforcement, Qinglong ensures zero cracking of corner GRC components, meeting long-term service requirements.
