UHPC and GRC cornice components differ significantly in service life. A clear understanding of this life gap and its causes provides a key reference for project material selection and helps reduce long-term operation and maintenance costs. Qinglong, an enterprise with 28 years of full-chain UHPC/GRC experience, draws on extensive project practice to analyze the life difference between the two and its core influencing factors.
I. Typical Service Life Ranges of UHPC and GRC Cornice Components
Under normal service environments and standardized maintenance conditions, UHPC cornice components can achieve a service life of 30-50 years, while GRC cornice components typically last 15-25 years—UHPC outlasts GRC by 15-25 years, a life improvement of 100%-167%. The UHPC cornice components applied by Qinglong in the Shanghai Century Plaza renovation project have a design service life of 40 years, far exceeding the 20-year design life of the GRC components in surrounding buildings built during the same period; in the Shenzhen Yirui Biotechnology Building project, UHPC cornice components remained intact after 5 years of use, while some GRC decorative components of the same period already showed slight signs of weathering. In extreme environments (such as coastal high-salt-mist areas and industrial pollution zones), the life gap between the two widens further, making UHPC's service life advantage even more pronounced.
II. Analysis of the Core Factors Behind the Life Difference
Differences in material performance are the fundamental cause of the life gap. UHPC uses a low water-binder ratio formula incorporating active ingredients such as silica fume and ultra-fine aggregates, with internal porosity ≤5% and extremely high density, effectively blocking the penetration of moisture and harmful ions, with freeze-thaw cycle resistance of ≥300 cycles and carbonation depth of ≤1mm; whereas GRC has a porosity of approximately 8%-12%, is prone to erosion by environmental media over long-term use, and withstands only about 200 freeze-thaw cycles. In terms of fiber performance, UHPC uses high-tensile-strength steel fibers with excellent alkali resistance that do not easily age or fracture over long-term use; GRC uses alkali-resistant glass fibres, which, while meeting basic requirements, gradually lose fiber strength under prolonged UV exposure. Qinglong's test data show that after 10 years of use in the same environment, UHPC components retain ≥90% of their strength, while GRC components retain approximately 75%-80%.
III. The Amplifying Effect of Environment and Maintenance on the Life Difference
Service environment and maintenance levels further influence the life gap between the two. In coastal high-salt-mist environments, chloride ions easily penetrate GRC, causing fiber corrosion and strength loss and shortening its life to 10-15 years; whereas UHPC's dense structure effectively blocks chloride ion penetration and maintains a service life of over 30 years—Qinglong achieved long-term stable performance with UHPC cornice components in the coastal Ouargla Hotel project in Algeria. In terms of maintenance, GRC components require surface protective treatment every 3-5 years, otherwise they are prone to cracking and powdering; the maintenance interval for UHPC components can be extended to 8-10 years, requiring only routine cleaning and inspection, which greatly reduces maintenance costs. Without standardized maintenance, GRC deteriorates more rapidly, further widening the gap with UHPC.
IV. Life Cost-Effectiveness and Selection Recommendations
Although UHPC's initial procurement cost is higher than GRC's (approximately 1.5-2 times), it offers a clear advantage in terms of full life-cycle cost. Calculated over a 40-year service period, UHPC cornice components require no replacement and only 2-3 maintenance operations, with total costs of approximately 60%-70% of GRC's (GRC requires 1-2 replacements and 4-6 maintenance operations). Selection recommendations: for high-end landmark buildings, coastal high-corrosion environments, and long-term projects where maintenance is inconvenient, UHPC cornice components should be the priority choice; for projects with limited budgets, mild service environments, and planned mid-term renovations, premium GRC components can be selected together with a standardized maintenance plan. With advanced production technology and full-process services, Qinglong can provide customized UHPC/GRC cornice solutions for different projects, balancing service life, cost, and decorative requirements.
