Acrylic emulsion (acrylate emulsion), a commonly used cement modifier, can significantly optimize material performance when properly added in GRC production, with particularly outstanding effects in improving bond strength, flexibility, and durability. Understanding its performance-enhancing effects and application essentials helps fully leverage its advantages to create high-quality GRC products.
1. Enhancement of GRC Bonding Performance by Acrylic Emulsion
Acrylic emulsion can significantly improve the interfacial bonding performance between GRC slurry and alkali-resistant glass fibers as well as aggregates. Its polymer particles fill internal pores in the slurry, forming a dense bonding interface and enhancing the bond strength between fibers and the cement matrix. Qinglong's test data show that GRC products with an appropriate amount of acrylic emulsion achieve fiber-to-matrix bond strength over 30% higher, effectively preventing fiber debonding during use. For the splicing and repair of GRC components, acrylic-emulsion-modified cement slurry can serve as a dedicated adhesive with bond strength ≥2.5MPa, ensuring firm and reliable joints. For example, in the Shanghai Qingpu R&D project, Qinglong used acrylic-emulsion-modified adhesive to splice large GRC components, with joint strength essentially consistent with that of the whole component. In addition, acrylic emulsion improves the compatibility of GRC with other materials, such as bonding with insulation boards and metal sheets, expanding GRC application scenarios.
2. Optimization of GRC Flexibility and Crack Resistance by Acrylic Emulsion
Traditional GRC has poor toughness and is prone to microcracks under temperature changes or external forces. The addition of acrylic emulsion can significantly improve component flexibility and reduce brittleness, as its polymer network absorbs deformation energy, reducing crack formation and propagation. GRC products with acrylic emulsion achieve more than 50% higher elongation at break and 40%-60% improved impact resistance. Acrylic-emulsion-modified GRC decorative profiles produced by Qinglong can withstand moderate bending without cracking, greatly reducing breakage rates during transport and installation. In environments with drastic temperature changes, acrylic emulsion relieves stress caused by thermal expansion and contraction, reducing thermal cracks. For example, acrylic-emulsion-modified GRC components used in a municipal project in northern China have withstood multiple winters with no obvious thermal cracks, showing significantly improved durability.
3. Enhancement of GRC Durability by Acrylic Emulsion
Acrylic emulsion improves the impermeability and corrosion resistance of GRC. Its polymer film blocks capillary pores inside the slurry, reducing the penetration of water and harmful media. Qinglong tests show that GRC components with acrylic emulsion have water absorption reduced by more than 30% and an impermeability grade of P10 or above. In harsh environments such as coastal areas with high salt mist and industrial pollution, acrylic emulsion forms a protective barrier, slowing the erosion of the cement matrix and fibers by harmful substances such as chloride ions and sulfates, and extending component service life. In addition, acrylic emulsion improves the freeze-thaw resistance of GRC, reducing mass loss and strength degradation caused by freeze-thaw cycles. After 200 freeze-thaw cycles, the strength loss rate of acrylic-emulsion-modified GRC is ≤5%, far better than unmodified products.
4. Proper Application of Acrylic Emulsion and Precautions
The acrylic emulsion dosage must be strictly controlled, typically 5%-10% of the cementitious material mass. Too low a dosage shows little effect, while too high a dosage reduces GRC strength. Qinglong has determined the optimal dosage range for different projects through experimental optimization. Select acrylic emulsion products with good compatibility with cement, preferably acrylate emulsions with solid content ≥45% and a glass transition temperature of 0-10℃. Qinglong cooperates with well-known emulsion manufacturers to ensure stable product quality. During production, control the water-binder ratio of the slurry to avoid excessive workability caused by the addition of acrylic emulsion, and extend mixing time to ensure uniform dispersion of the acrylic emulsion. During the curing stage, ensure adequate moisture to promote cement hydration and acrylic emulsion film formation, enhancing the modification effect. Through scientific application, acrylic emulsion can fully exert its modifying effect, helping create high-performance GRC products suited to more complex application scenarios.
