What Is the Core Difference Between GRC and Traditional Cement Components?

As a new type of architectural decoration material, GRC differs significantly from traditional cement components in material composition, performance, and application scenarios. Its unique advantages have gradually replaced traditional cement components, making it the first choice for high-end architectural decoration. Clarifying the core differences between the two helps with precise product selection and improves project quality and efficiency.

I. Core Differences in Material Composition and Production Processes

In terms of material composition, GRC uses cement and quartz sand as base materials, with the key addition of alkali-resistant glass fibers as reinforcing material at a fiber content of 2%-5% of the cementitious material mass; Qinglong achieves a balance of strength and toughness through precise proportioning. Traditional cement components consist only of cement, sand and gravel, and water, with no reinforcing fibers—they rely on steel bars for strength and are heavy with poor toughness. In terms of production processes, GRC employs spray-up molding, premix casting, and other processes combined with constant temperature and humidity curing; Qinglong's fully automated production lines enable precise molding of complex shapes, with component thickness controllable at 10-50mm. Traditional cement components are mostly cast on-site or precast with simple molds, curing depends on the natural environment, and component thickness is usually above 50mm—their shapes are limited, making complex curves and hollow-out designs difficult to achieve.

II. Key Performance Differences Comparison

In terms of mechanical properties, GRC has a flexural strength of up to 18-25MPa and a fracture energy of ≥400J/m², offering good impact resistance and toughness; Qinglong products can withstand moderate collisions without cracking. Traditional cement components have a flexural strength of only 5-10MPa, poor toughness, and break easily upon impact. In terms of weight, GRC has a density of 1800-2000kg/m³, 30%-50% lighter than traditional cement components. For example, decorative moldings of the same size weigh only 1/2 of traditional components, greatly reducing building loads—in Qinglong's Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone project, GRC curtain wall panels effectively reduced the load-bearing pressure on the steel structure. In terms of durability, GRC offers excellent freeze-thaw and carbonation resistance, with a service life of over 20 years; traditional cement components are prone to cracking and weathering, typically lasting 5-10 years with high maintenance costs.

III. Differences in Application Scenarios and Decorative Effects

With its advantages of light weight, high strength, and flexible shaping, GRC is widely used in high-end projects such as grand theaters, commercial complexes, and cultural landmarks. It can achieve complex decorative effects such as double-curved surfaces, hollow-out carvings, and large sculptures—examples such as Qinglong's "Chinese Red Lantern" design for the Wuhan Han Show Theater and the wood-imitation translucent components for Century Plaza on Shanghai's Nanjing East Road both demonstrate GRC's artistic expressiveness. Traditional cement components, due to their heavy weight and limited shapes, are mostly used for simple decoration in low-rise buildings, such as ordinary walls and foundation slope protection—their decorative effects are crude and fail to meet the demands of high-end projects. In addition, GRC can be prefabricated in factories and installed on-site, offering high construction efficiency; Qinglong completed the installation of 120,000 square meters of GRC roofing for the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center in just a few months. Traditional cement components require long on-site construction periods, are greatly affected by weather, and their quality is difficult to control.

IV. Differences in Overall Cost and Cost-Effectiveness

In terms of initial investment, GRC has a higher unit price than traditional cement components due to its demanding raw materials and production processes; however, its full lifecycle cost is lower—GRC has a long service life and low maintenance costs, and Qinglong products require virtually no maintenance during the warranty period, whereas traditional cement components need regular repairs and replacement, resulting in higher long-term costs. From the perspective of project benefits, GRC's lightweight nature can reduce building structure costs, shorten construction periods, and enhance overall project quality and added value; although traditional cement components have lower initial costs, they are easily damaged and have poor decorative effects, which may compromise project quality and market competitiveness. As GRC production technology matures, the price gap between it and traditional cement components is gradually narrowing, making it the preferred choice for an increasing number of projects.
