Cracking in GRC components is a common problem, mostly caused by ambient temperature changes, improper installation, material aging, or external impact. If not addressed promptly, cracks may gradually expand, affecting the structural stability and service life of the components. Targeted treatment plans should be adopted based on the size, location, and cause of the cracks, to avoid secondary damage caused by blind repairs.
1. Crack Classification and Cause Identification
Based on crack width and degree of hazard, cracks can be classified as micro cracks (width <0.1mm), minor cracks (0.1-0.3mm), moderate cracks (0.3-1mm), and severe cracks (>1mm). Micro cracks are mostly caused by temperature shrinkage and have little impact on the structure; minor cracks may result from installation stress or uneven local loading and require timely protection; moderate and severe cracks may affect component strength and require priority treatment. When determining the cause, inspection records, environmental conditions, and installation details must be considered. In the double-curved GRC project of the Guangxi New Media Center, Qinglong precisely formulated repair plans through crack monitoring and cause analysis to ensure component safety.
2. Treatment Plans for Cracks of Different Grades
Micro crack treatment: use a penetrating repair agent, applying it evenly over the crack surface so that it penetrates inside and cures, filling tiny gaps and enhancing surface sealing. Qinglong's dedicated penetrating repair agent achieves strength close to the GRC body after curing, effectively preventing water infiltration and delaying crack propagation. Minor crack treatment: first clean dust and debris from the crack surface, fill the crack with dedicated repair mortar, smooth the surface, and then apply a protective coating to ensure the repaired area matches the appearance of the original component. During repair, the thickness of the repair mortar must be controlled to avoid stress concentration caused by excessive buildup. Moderate and severe crack treatment: such cracks may affect structural safety, so the component's load-bearing capacity must first be assessed. If the crack does not penetrate through and strength is not significantly affected, a "grooving-filling-reinforcement" approach can be adopted: after grooving and cleaning, fill with epoxy resin mortar and reinforce the exterior with carbon fiber fabric; if the crack penetrates through or strength is severely compromised, the component must be replaced promptly. Qinglong can provide customized replacement components and professional installation services, as in the Shenzhen Longhua Xiangshan Science and Technology Park project, where severely cracked GRC curtain wall panels were precisely replaced.
3. Key Technical Points of Crack Repair
Repair materials must be compatible with the GRC body to ensure strong bonding and matched performance. Qinglong's dedicated repair materials have undergone rigorous testing and are highly compatible with its own GRC components, ensuring overall strength meets standards after repair. The repair process requires controlling ambient temperature and humidity, avoiding work in high or low temperatures or on rainy days, to ensure the repair materials cure properly. For crack repair on high-altitude components, proper safety protection measures must be taken and dedicated work platforms erected. Qinglong's construction team holds high-altitude work qualifications and can complete repairs safely and efficiently. After repair, curing and testing are required, with a curing period of no less than 7 days, checking the flatness and strength of the repaired area to ensure it meets usage requirements.
4. Crack Prevention and Long-Term Monitoring Recommendations
Crack prevention must start from multiple stages: design, installation, and maintenance. Reserve sufficient expansion joints at the design stage, control installation precision to avoid stress concentration, and provide temperature and humidity protection during daily maintenance. Establish a long-term monitoring mechanism to monitor cracks in GRC components at key locations and regularly record crack changes. Qinglong can provide digital monitoring solutions that use sensors to monitor crack development in real time and provide early risk warnings. A comprehensive crack inspection is recommended once a year to promptly address new cracks, preventing small cracks from developing into serious problems and extending the service life of GRC components.
