Durability is the core value of GRC exterior wall systems, and its measurement indicators directly reflect the long-term stability and service life of a building facade. Qinglong Group, a national high-tech enterprise with 28 years of deep expertise in the GRC field, participated in drafting the "Technical Standard for Architectural Applications of Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC)". Drawing on long-term tracking data from landmark projects such as the Wuhan Han Show Theatre, this article analyzes the core measurement indicators of durability and improvement solutions.
The durability of a GRC exterior wall system refers to its ability to maintain its original performance and appearance under natural environmental conditions (wind, rain, temperature changes, ultraviolet radiation, etc.). A high-quality GRC exterior wall system should have a design service life of ≥25 years. Through material R&D, process optimization, and joint design, Qinglong has enabled its GRC exterior wall projects across different climate regions nationwide to remain in good condition for more than 15 years, with some early projects showing no obvious damage even after 20 years.
Mechanical performance stability is the fundamental indicator. It mainly covers the long-term retention rates of flexural strength, tensile strength, and impact strength. After 20 years of use, the mechanical performance loss rate of a high-quality GRC exterior wall system should be ≤10%. The GRC materials produced by Qinglong have an initial flexural strength of ≥15MPa, with a strength loss rate of ≤8% after accelerated aging tests. In the Hainan International Convention and Exhibition Center project, a 120,000-square-meter GRC roof has withstood years of wind and rain while its mechanical performance remains stable.
Weather resistance is key to environmental adaptability. Indicators include freeze-thaw resistance, UV aging resistance, and acid rain corrosion resistance. Core requirements include a strength loss rate of ≤5% after freeze-thaw cycles (100 cycles), no obvious discoloration or cracking after UV aging, and no surface sanding or corrosion in acid rain environments. Qinglong's GRC materials have passed weather resistance testing by the provincial R&D center, with all indicators exceeding industry standards, and have performed excellently in overseas projects across different climates such as Singapore and Saudi Arabia.
Bonding and anchoring durability ensure structural safety. The long-term retention of bond strength between GRC components and the substrate, as well as the pull-out resistance of the anchoring system, is critical to preventing components from falling off. The composite anchoring system adopted by Qinglong has demonstrated a pull-out force loss rate of ≤5% and bond strength retention of ≥0.3MPa in long-term testing. In Luban Award projects such as the Shenzhen Pingshan High-tech Zone Comprehensive Service Center, it has ensured the long-term safety and stability of the GRC exterior wall system.
Appearance durability maintains decorative value. It mainly measures surface color stability, stain resistance, and crack control capability, requiring a surface color difference of ≤3ΔE after 10 years of use, no obvious cracks (crack width ≤0.1mm), and easy cleanability. By optimizing the surface protective coating and base material mix ratio, Qinglong has given its GRC exterior walls excellent stain resistance and color stability. In the Guangzhou Xinghewan project series, the facades remain beautiful and clean after many years.
In material R&D, high alkali-resistant glass fiber and premium cement-based materials are used, with mineral admixtures and special additives added to enhance the density and anti-aging performance of GRC. In production processes, factory prefabrication and steam curing are implemented to ensure uniform strength and stable performance of components, while strictly controlling the water-binder ratio and fiber content. In joint design, the structures of vulnerable parts such as splicing seams and anchoring points are optimized, with reinforced waterproof sealing and anti-corrosion treatment.
During the project implementation stage, designs are customized according to the climate conditions of the project site, such as reinforced freeze-thaw resistance design in severe cold regions and additional anti-corrosion coatings in acid rain areas. During the after-sales maintenance stage, a system of regular inspection and maintenance is established to promptly address minor damage and extend the service life of the GRC exterior wall system.
The durability of a GRC exterior wall system is a comprehensive reflection of material performance, design level, construction techniques, and later-stage maintenance, and its measurement indicators provide a scientific basis for material selection and quality control in projects. With 28 years of technical accumulation, 58 related patents, and hands-on experience from thousands of projects, Qinglong Group continuously improves the durability of its GRC exterior wall systems, providing buildings with long-term, stable decorative and protective solutions. Choosing a supplier with technological R&D strength and full-chain service capability is the core guarantee for ensuring that GRC exterior wall systems meet durability standards and for achieving long-term project value.
